Market Overview

Uganda is pursuing an ambitious rail development agenda centred on the East African Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). The Kampala–Malaba SGR, part of a regional network linking Kenya's SGR to Uganda and onward to Rwanda and the DRC, is in planning and early procurement stages. Uganda Railway Corporation is rehabilitating the existing metre-gauge network on the Northern and Western corridors. Kampala is studying a Bus Rapid Transit and urban rail system to address severe traffic congestion. Uganda's landlocked position makes rail connectivity to the Port of Mombasa a national economic priority. Chinese contractors and financiers have been active in SGR feasibility work. Uganda's oil and gas discoveries in the Albertine Graben have created additional demand for freight rail to transport equipment and future exports.
