Market Overview
Ukraine operates one of Europe's largest rail networks, managed by Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ). The broad-gauge network is a critical artery for the country's economy, connecting agricultural, industrial, and mining regions to ports and borders. Since the Russian invasion in 2022, Ukrainian railways have played a vital role in evacuating civilians, supplying the military, and maintaining economic activity under wartime conditions. Post-war reconstruction of Ukraine's rail infrastructure is a major priority for the EU, multilateral development banks, and bilateral partners. Significant rail assets have been damaged or destroyed during the conflict. The reconstruction programme will involve gauge conversion on key corridors to integrate with the European standard gauge network, as well as modernisation of rolling stock and signalling. Ukraine's rail sector is seen as central to its post-war economic recovery and European integration.
