Market Overview

Yemen has no operational national rail network. A planned Yemeni national railway, intended to connect the Red Sea coast to the Gulf of Aden and inland cities, was in the pre-construction planning stage before the 2015 conflict began. Aden and Hodeidah were identified as key port terminals in the planned network. Yemen's ongoing conflict has halted all infrastructure development. Post-conflict reconstruction, when it occurs, will require rebuilding basic road, port, and utility infrastructure before rail investment becomes viable. Gulf states, China, and international development institutions have all engaged in discussions about Yemen's eventual reconstruction. The country's strategic position at the southern entrance to the Red Sea gives its infrastructure long-term geopolitical significance.
