The first two Coradia Stream electric multiple-unit trains will be put into operation from September 1, connecting the capital Sofia to the town of Pernik, in western Bulgaria, the second largest city of Plovdiv and the town of Svilengrad, in southern Bulgaria, Alstom said in a press release.
The six-car Alstom trains, which have a capacity of over 320 seats and can run at a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour, will be used for services taking up to five hours.
Bulgaria signed the deal for the 35 trains in April 2025, after selecting Alstom to deliver the rolling stock in a tender auction in March. All trains delivered by the end of August 2026 will be financed by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The rest will be funded by the state budget.
