CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Wins Two EMU Contracts in Tunisia Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Nanjing Puzhen has secured two separate contracts to supply electric multiple-units for railway services in Tunisia, as reported by Railway Gazette on July 29, 2026. The larger of the two deals involves an order from Transtu, the operator of the Tunis Métro Léger light rail network and the Tunis – La Goulette – La Marsa suburban line. Transtu has purchased 18 EMUs for the 18 km La Marsa route, a line that passes near important Carthaginian archaeological sites. The contract, valued at €90 million and signed on July 10, includes a five-year maintenance package, spare parts, and depot equipment. Financing comes from a €45 million loan guaranteed by the European Union from the European Investment Bank, matched by €45 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development. Each of these EMUs will be 40 meters long and can carry 400 passengers, with 90 seats. They are designed for a top speed of 100 km/h and will feature air-conditioning, CCTV, a passenger information system, and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. The new fleet is expected to enable train services every six minutes during peak hours. In a separate transaction, national railway SNCFT placed a €38.2 million order on June 30 for five EMUs intended for the Moknine – Mahdia section of the metre-gauge Sahel suburban railway, which is electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz. This procurement is part of a broader program to modernize and double-track the route, with infrastructure upgrades financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development.
