KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd has secured its 10th infrastructure project in Taiwan after being awarded the Kaohsiung Metropolitan mass rapid transit (MRT) Xiaogang-Linyuan Line civil works and electrochemical facilities worth RM3.3 billion.
The project was awarded by the Kaohsiung city government MRT bureau, a division under the Kaohsiung city government responsible for its MRT development.
The latest contract strengthens Gamuda's position in Kaohsiung's rail infrastructure development following its ongoing works on the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line and the earlier completion of the Orange Line.
The project was awarded to an unincorporated joint venture between Gamuda, who holds a 70 per cent stake, and Taiwanese construction firm Shang Ting Construction Co Ltd, which holds the remaining 30 per cent.
Based on its stake, Gamuda's portion of the contract is valued at RM2.31 billion.
The project is expected to take seven years and four months to complete.
Gamuda, in a statement, said the joint venture will undertake the construction of three underground stations, one elevated station, underground twin-bound railway tracks ranging about 3.88 kilometres and six cross passages.
The contract comes less than a year after Gamuda secured its ninth project in Taiwan, namely the Kaohsiung Port Intercontinental LNG Terminal wharf and connecting roads project.
This underscores the group's expanding footprint and growing momentum in the Taiwanese infrastructure sector.
Among its notable rail-related projects in Taiwan are the Xizhi Donghu MRT project and the Taoyuan City Underground Railway project.
Its infrastructure portfolio also includes the Guantang Marine Bridge, the Seawall-Taipei Port project, and the 345kV Gangfeng-Zhongke, Zhongke-Hengshan Underground Transmission Line project.
Shang Ting, Gamuda's local partner for the Xiaogang–Linyuan Line project, is a Taiwanese private limited company with a paid-up capital of RM380 million.
The company specialises in general construction and public infrastructure works, and has completed major projects including the Kaohsiung Port Seventh Container Centre and several government civic buildings across Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
