Greece has launched railway.gov.gr, a new digital platform offering live, real-time tracking of trains across the national rail network, marking the first time citizens can monitor train movements publicly and continuously. The platform went live this week, initially covering passenger services on the Athens–Thessaloniki corridor, with nationwide expansion planned over the next two months. By March 2026, all trains operating from Piraeus to Greece’s northern borders are expected to be equipped with the system, with full nationwide installation scheduled by April 2026. Public access and real-time visibility Through railway.gov.gr, users can view trains on a live map, track their speed and direction, check estimated arrival times and receive updates on delays. The platform also provides live video streaming from cameras installed on trains, offering real-time visibility of routes. Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis said the system introduces a new level of transparency and oversight. “For the first time, citizens have a live and accurate picture of train traffic,” he said, describing the platform as an additional layer of safety that complements existing rail systems. The railway.gov.gr platform provides live tracking of trains across Greece’s rail network, offering real-time route visibility and service information. Technology and safety features Each train is equipped with high-precision satellite tracking technology that uses Greece’s HEPOS positioning system alongside Europe’s Galileo satellite network. The technology enables location accuracy down to a few centimeters and transmits data with minimal delay, allowing authorities to monitor train movements in real time. Beyond public information, the system includes operational safety features such as automated alerts and the ability to detect potential risks, including deviations from designated routes. In case of irregularities, notification protocols are activated at control centers. Transport Secretary General Stelios Sakaretsios said Greece is the first country to deploy high-precision satellite monitoring at a national scale for rail operations. “This is not simply a digital application, but a new operational infrastructure where every train is monitored in real time with measurable performance data,” he said. The new railway.gov.gr platform allows passengers to monitor train routes, arrival times and service updates in real time across Greece’s rail network. The launch of railway.gov.gr forms part of a broader effort to modernize Greece’s railway network, including infrastructure upgrades, onboard safety systems and fleet renewal. Officials say the new platform strengthens oversight and supports a more data-driven and transparent rail system.
