Kenya Railways has officially launched a Ksh65 billion railway expansion project aimed at easing transport challenges within Nairobi and its neighbouring counties.
In a notice dated May 12, 2026, the corporation invited companies to express interest in undertaking the project under the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP).
According to Kenya Railways, the project will cover Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Murang’a counties, with the plan aimed at improving intermodal and multimodal urban transport systems.
The project is being financed through support from the World Bank, with Kenya Railways stating that part of the funding will go toward consultancy services for the planning phase.

"The government has applied for financing from the World Bank towards the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services," Kenya Railways announced.
"Consulting services include the development of a sustainable urban mobility plan for the Nairobi metropolitan area, encompassing the county governments of Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Murang’a," it added.
Kenya Railways disclosed that the project will focus on the integration of different transport systems, including commuter rail and public buses, to ease movement within the Nairobi metropolitan area.
The corporation noted that the consultancy assignment for the multi-billion-shilling project begins on October 27, 2026 and will run for a period of one year and three months.
Under the proposal, selected companies will be tasked with conducting urban mobility planning and environmental and social assessments and developing strategies for seamless public transport connectivity within the region.
Kenya Railways clarified that the consulting firms must have extensive experience in urban transport planning, metropolitan mobility systems and large-scale infrastructure studies.
Meanwhile, construction activities are expected to begin in phases, with feasibility studies, land acquisition processes, and environmental assessments already underway.
Nairobi city has continued to experience rapid population growth, increased traffic congestion and rising demand for efficient public transport, prompting the government to pursue long-term urban mobility solutions.
