Consortium Will Oversee Huancayo-Huancavelica Line Upgrade for Five Years

Korea National Railway announced on June 2 that it was selected as the final contractor for the ‘Design Review and Construction Supervision of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway Improvement in Peru’ project, which is worth approximately $13 million (approximately 19.2 billion won) and was ordered by the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Transportation Infrastructure of Peru.
This project is a large-scale undertaking to modernize an aging 128.7km route operating in the central highlands of Peru. The corporation’s consortium will carry out supervision tasks throughout the overall construction and operation stages for approximately the next five years.
This contract award is a significant accomplishment achieved after fierce competition with global railway powerhouses such as Spain and Japan. The corporation formed a global consortium with domestic engineering firms and local companies to participate in the bidding, and it secured an overwhelming first place by recording perfect scores in all technology and price categories.
The corporation plans to utilize this project as a springboard to help domestic railway companies enter the Peruvian market. Based on the successful execution of the project in Peru, it plans to step up efforts to target the large-scale railway infrastructure markets in neighboring Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Panama, and Colombia. The joint entry model through public-private cooperation is expected to become a new export pathway in the Latin American market.
Lee An-ho, acting chairman of Korea National Railway, evaluated this contract award as a major achievement obtained after a head-to-head contest with advanced global countries, emphasizing, “We will elevate the status of Korean railways on the world stage and lead the global market together with our companies.”
