Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and its regional subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHI‑AP) have received an order from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) to supply eight two‑car trains, totaling 16 cars, for the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system of the Sengkang‑Punggol Light Rapid Transit (SPLRT) line. The order is part of a project that was first awarded to MHI in January 2023 to enhance capacity on the SPLRT line, and it follows a May 2023 order for an additional eight trains.

The SPLRT network, opened in 2003, links the Sengkang and Punggol stations on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North East Line to surrounding residential areas. MHI originally supplied the trains and all systems for the line’s opening and has, over more than 20 years, delivered additional trainsets, implemented two‑car operations, expanded the depot, and increased transport capacity. Last year, a new set of two trainsets entered commercial operation, and the current contract will deliver further units of the same model.

MHI plans to deliver a total of 33 trainsets for the SPLRT line, including the eight trainsets covered by this contract. Population growth and commercial expansion in the Sengkang and Punggol districts have driven residential development and increased LRT ridership. The new trains are expected to support the rising transport demands and provide residents with a more convenient means of transportation.
