Millions of euros for Moldova’s railways

June 4, 2026

The Moldovan government has approved a draft law that establishes the necessary framework for utilizing the EUR 15 million allocated in the 2026 state budget for the development and modernization of Moldova’s railway sector.

The initiative aims in particular to strengthen the financial mechanisms through which two essential contracts can be concluded: the multi-year contract for the management of railway infrastructure and the public service contract for passenger rail transport. These contracts may be signed even before the completion of the reorganization process of the state-owned enterprise “Calea Ferată din Moldova”.

The government of the neighboring country argues that this flexibility is necessary to avoid delays in funding the works and to allow for continued investment in railway infrastructure, including the maintenance and repair of railway lines, as well as the development of passenger transport services, in line with the needs of the population.

An important element of the draft is the introduction of the possibility of co-financing modernization works, which would allow for a more efficient use of public resources and attract additional investment in the sector.

Simpler Legislation

The document also provides for the simplification of procedures for approving certain European railway regulations, a measure that would facilitate the harmonization of national legislation with European Union standards and accelerate the opening of the passenger rail transport market to more operators.

Authorities emphasize that the draft is part of the broader process of aligning the Republic of Moldova with European standards, in the context of commitments made on the path to European Union accession.
