Pakistan railways advances major reform, modernization plans

Pakistan Railways is implementing a series of operational reforms and development projects aimed at enhancing efficiency, infrastructure, and public services across the country’s rail network. The initiatives, described by officials as unprecedented in the history of Pakistan Railways, focus on modernizing operations, improving institutional performance, and providing advanced facilities to passengers. Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi briefed Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar and SIFC National Coordinator Lt. Gen. Sarfraz Ahmed on the steps already undertaken, ongoing projects, and the institution’s future vision. Both Akhtar and Lt. Gen. Ahmed praised the reform measures and noted their potential contribution to national development, according to the press release. The officials emphasized the importance of continued coordination to modernize Pakistan Railways, upgrade infrastructure, strengthen transparency, and improve professional efficiency. Pakistan Railways operates over 7,791 km of track and serves millions of passengers annually, with current projects including station upgrades, track improvements, and enhanced operational management practices.
