Sources told Dawn that as the Shalimar Express approached Lakha Road Station, the interlocking system was set in a way that diverted the train onto a loop line where a goods train was already parked. The driver of the Shalimar Express, Haji Fayyaz, stated, “Our kanta (interlocking/signalling system) was set for the loop line, whereas we had to pass the station without stopping.” He further explained, “The brake also did not work properly, and the signal was also red,” adding that all passengers and crew members remained unharmed in the incident. The collision caused the locomotive and several coaches of the Shalimar Express to derail and capsize, according to sources. A relief train was dispatched to the site to assist with the situation and restore normal operations.
