Siemens Mobility Expands Use of Low-Carbon Steel in Rail Vehicle Manufacturing

🗓 25 October 2025

Siemens Mobility has signed a new supply agreement with voestalpine, further increasing the use of low-carbon “green steel” in its rail vehicle production. Under the arrangement, Siemens Mobility will source around 20% of its steel requirements in 2025 from voestalpine’s Greentec Steel Edition, a CO₂-reduced product line. The agreement also includes options for additional volumes over the next three years, reinforcing Siemens Mobility’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and a climate-conscious supply chain. The new contract builds on the “Green Steel for Bogies” pilot initiative launched in 2022 at Siemens Mobility’s global competence center for bogies in Graz, where approximately 3,000 bogies are produced each year. Increasing the proportion of CO₂-reduced steel in this facility represents a significant step toward a more environmentally sustainable rail industry. “By expanding our use of green steel, we are making a tangible contribution to a more sustainable railway sector,” said Andreas Mehlhorn, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Mobility. “This initiative enhances our competitiveness, reinforces supply chain resilience, and underlines our leadership in sustainable mobility solutions.” voestalpine’s Greentec Steel Edition products are manufactured at the company’s Linz plant using an optimized production process that cuts carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional steelmaking. Siemens Mobility already utilizes CO₂-reduced steel in components such as bogies, locomotives, and passenger coaches and intends to expand its use progressively across product lines. The collaboration with voestalpine aligns with Siemens Mobility’s broader sustainability roadmap, which targets a 90% reduction in CO₂-equivalent emissions by 2030 within its operations and net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2050. The transition to low-carbon steel plays a crucial role in achieving these goals, supporting rail’s position as the most sustainable mode of mass transport. In September, voestalpine formally certified Siemens Mobility for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions declaration covering all steel supplied under the partnership. This certification ensures transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain and reaffirms both companies’ dedication to advancing sustainability in the global transport and manufacturing sectors. Siemens Mobility, a separately managed company of Siemens AG, has been advancing intelligent transport solutions for over 175 years. Its portfolio includes rolling stock, rail automation, electrification, turnkey systems, and digital solutions that enhance passenger experience and ensure lifecycle value. In fiscal 2024, Siemens Mobility reported revenue of €11.4 billion and employed around 41,900 people worldwide.
