Uruguay’s US$2.6 billion (bn) infrastructure plan for the 2025–29 period will feature 50 new tenders in the coming years, with 40% scheduled for 2026 and 2027, according to public works minister Lucía Etcheverry.
There are currently 77 contracts under execution, with over half related to roadworks, while an additional 25 are close to starting construction, Etcheverry said during a presentation to the marketing directives association (ADM).
“We will invest in the big logistic corridors, but also in secondary and tertiary routes,” she said.
The minister added that the government is open to using public–private partnerships (PPP) for future tenders, even though the previous administration (2019–24) ruled them out for new road projects due to slow awarding processes.
Although US$2.1bn of the plan is focused on roadworks, Etcheverry said the government also aims to reactivate the country’s rail network.
Some of the works highlighted by the minister include:
• Route 2 cargo corridor
• Connection between Route 4 and Route 26
• Connection between Route 90 and Route 26
• Bypass on Route 7 in Tala municipality
• Bypass on Route 27 near the dry port in Rivera department
• Widening of Route 11 between the Interbalnearia highway and Route 8
• Rehabilitation of Route 26
• Access roads for the new bridge over the Yaguarón River
• Improvements to Montevideo’s east access roads (Routes 101 and 102)
