The 2026–27 Supertram Business Plan has been launched, setting out the next steps in strengthening and modernising the network. It forms a key part of South Yorkshire’s ambition to deliver a fully integrated public transport system and follows the introduction of the South Yorkshire People’s Network, the region’s new identity and vision for a clearer, fairer and more joined‑up transport future.
The new Business Plan which was approved at the Mayoral Combined Authority board meeting on Tuesday 24 March, includes a record level of investment in Supertram, with over £36 million committed next year. Some of the biggest upgrades coming over the next year include:
A brand new Tram Train stop at Magna opening Thursday 9 April, providing better links to Templeborough, Tinsley and the Magna Science Adventure Park.
Upgrades to the existing tram fleet, keeping trams reliable until new vehicles are delivered.
A continued fares freeze until December 2026, helping keep travel affordable during the cost‑of‑living pressures.
Replacement of major sections of rail, including the busy Delta Junction at Park Square, to make journeys smoother and more reliable.
Repairs to the concrete track slab along key routes, improving the surface for cyclists, drivers and other road users.
A brand new real‑time Tram Management System, being developed with Hitachi Rail, and when completed next year, this will give passengers accurate, up‑to‑the‑minute tram information at stops, online and in travel apps.
The plan also looks ahead to the future extension of the tram network. This includes early work on a possible second tram route across Sheffield city centre, which would help keep trams moving if the main line is ever blocked, as well as exploring options for future tram and Tram Train extensions with newly secured £7.5m government funding.
