Vingroup and Alstom have signed a rolling‑stock contract and a Technology License Agreement (TLA) on 6 October 2026. The agreement will see Alstom transfer train‑manufacturing technology to Vietnam and supply 200 Metropolis trainsets for Hanoi’s urban rail network. All trains will be new‑generation five‑car units, featuring aluminium car bodies that reduce axle load, a wide‑body design that maximises interior space, full automation at GoA4, and a modern braking system that combines regenerative and disc brakes.

Eighty‑three trainsets will be designed and built at Alstom’s Valenciennes Petite‑Forêt site in France, a centre of expertise for metros. Alstom will also provide technology, engineering expertise, tooling support and key components, enabling Vingroup to develop local manufacturing and assembly capabilities for the remaining 117 trainsets in Vietnam. The partnership is positioned as a foundation for strengthening Vietnam’s self‑reliance and modernising its rail industry ecosystem, with prospects for a long‑term industrial partnership and expanded participation in the global value chain.

Vingroup, through its subsidiary Vinhomes, is the general contractor for Hanoi’s metro projects. The partnership aims to supply rolling stock for Hanoi’s urban rail projects while progressively building local capabilities, thereby contributing to the city’s long‑term urban rail network. Hanoi’s Capital Master Plan envisions a 979‑kilometre network of 18 lines by 2045, making it one of Southeast Asia’s largest urban rail development programmes. The expansion is expected to reduce traffic congestion, mitigate environmental pollution and improve residents’ quality of life.
