Hitachi Rail has landed a €481.6 million contract to deliver next-generation urban mobility for Turin, with the first section of Metro Line 2 expected by 2033. The agreement covers the “Rebaudengo-Politecnico” segment for InfraTO, reinforcing Hitachi Rail’s status as a leader in fully automated metro systems. The deal breaks down into €388.5 million for the “Rebaudengo-Porta Nuova” base section and €93.1 million for the optional “Porta Nuova-Policlinico” extension, which may be activated later. When complete, Line 2 will run roughly 28 km, linking 31 stations, with all trains fully ‘Made in Italy’. Each train will carry 404 passengers, 336 standing, 68 seated, plus dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility and bicycles, combining capacity, comfort, and accessibility. Vehicles will integrate a cutting-edge CBTC signalling system in GoA4 configuration, enabling fully driverless operation, from starting and stopping to door control. Hitachi Rail will also deploy HMAX for Rail, its AI-driven digital asset management system, already used on 2,000+ trains worldwide, to monitor real-time data, optimise performance, extend asset life, and enable rapid interventions. With advanced automation, smart monitoring, and Italian engineering, Turin is set for a modern, sustainable metro that will redefine urban mobility. “The new Line 2 in Turin will significantly enhance the city’s public transport network, where Hitachi Rail is already present with the new trams, improving connectivity between different urban areas and encouraging the shift from private vehicles to public transport. Through fully automated, digital, and energy-efficient solutions, we continue to support a concrete transition towards low-emission mobility models, leveraging industrial and technological expertise developed globally and rooted in the Italian production system.”
