Mitsubishi to supply traction systems for NS double-decker trains

🗓 8 August 2025

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has commenced the delivery of traction systems for Dutch national rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen’s (NS) new fleet of Double-Decker New Generation (DDNG) trains. The equipment is being supplied to Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A. (CAF), with deliveries beginning in July. A total of 60 trains – comprising 300 cars – will be equipped under the current arrangement. Mitsubishi Electric expects to supply traction systems for 266 trains (1,006 cars) to NS by 2031, as part of a broader supply programme that builds on previous projects for the operator’s Sprinter New Generation (SNG) fleet. Proven performance in Dutch rail operations Mitsubishi Electric’s selection for the DDNG contract follows its successful delivery of traction systems for 206 SNG trains (706 cars) under agreements signed with CAF in 2015 and 2019. These systems have been in commercial operation since 2018 and have demonstrated consistent performance in terms of safety and reliability across the Dutch rail network. This operational track record was a key factor in CAF and NS’s decision to retain Mitsubishi Electric as the traction system supplier for the new generation of double-decker trains. Support from European partners In addition to traction equipment, auxiliary power supply units for the DDNG fleet will be delivered by Polish manufacturer MEDCOM Sp. z o.o., in which Mitsubishi Electric holds a capital stake. The companies have been collaborating since 2015 to expand Mitsubishi Electric’s presence and customer network across Europe.
